At LATKids, we believe the hardest job in the world is being the parent of a disabled child.

Our mission is to find kids in Mississippi who need our help, develop and adapt assistive technology for them, then make available - to everyone, no matter where they - the things we've learned and the products we've developed. Everything we've created is here on this site, and it's available for download at no charge. That's right - it's all free!

Our video showing some of the work we do here at LATKids is finished, and you can watch it online. Take ten minutes and meet LATKids director Bob Crisler, and some of the kids, parents, and teachers we work with, and get a look at some of the technologies we're exploring.

Our thanks go out to the good folks from the Madison County School District for taking time out of their schedules to talk to us on camera about how LATKids is changing the lives of children in Mississippi.

In July we hosted an event we called "A Midsummer's Night Out". We invited children from around the state who use synthetic speech devices to speak for them. We staged an adaptation of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" complete with period costumes. In addition, we met with each family individually to determine what we need to do to assist them further in their home and school setting. When we broke camp the next day, we had our marching orders. Our goal was to have our campers begin school with some new tools and momentum. Our other objective was to strengthen our community of users of these assistive technologies by hosting an event of this sort. I think we met those objectives.

You can download our adapted script for your use by clicking here.

You can find similar costumes at many online costume stores.

At LATKids, we're convinced that the most difficult job in America is being the parent of a disabled child. That is why we do what we do. We want to help your family.

In the meantime, check out our site. Our latest creation is The Zone. This place in the blogosphere is set up for you. We hope children, their families and their schools will take advantage of this advancement in communication. We also want to foster relationships between schools in different geographic areas. This very cool tool will allow them to do just that as well as utilize some of the Assitive Technology that they use to do everything else. This adds to our growing list of useful tools to create meaningful activities that transcend the four walls around us. Let us know what you think.

Here's some of what we'll be doing in the next few months:

Feedback from our increasingly popular Aug Comm program, Speak for Yourself, has inspired the next generation in synthetic speech output offerings from LATKids. Be on the lookout for our literacy-based communication offering this autumn. We're really proud of what we're working on for you.

A Midsummer's Night Out is rapildy approaching and if you want to be a part of it, please, don't hesitate to contact us as slots are filling. You'll find more details in our news section above.

Please take a moment and subscribe to our web site, and we'll keep you informed of our events and developments.
